LEAF Is Committed to Preventing Alcohol Use & Addiction Through K–12 Education

April is Alcohol Awareness Month! While we are committed to year-round education about substance use, we’d like to draw special attention to alcohol this month.

One of the best ways to combat substance use is through early education. LEAF works with many local school districts to provide educational programming to students. We work with students K–12.

Read on for a sampling of the programs we currently offer.

Teen Intervene: a Personalized Support Program

Teen Intervene is designed specifically for high school students who are experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use. The Teen Intervene program provides education, support, and guidance for teens.

Through this brief intervention, youth work one-to-one with a prevention specialist in identifying and changing their choices and behaviors. Teen Intervene consists of two to three one-on-one sessions with a Prevention Specialist. Parents may be invited to join the last session to address issues as a family.

To learn more about Teen Intervene, see this PDF flyer and contact us at (607) 432-0090 with questions.

Too Good for Drugs: a Prevention Program

Too Good for Drugs is an evidence-based prevention program designed to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use among students K–12.

Too Good for Drugs includes a separate, developmentally appropriate curriculum for each grade level.

This program develops and strengthens essential life skills: goal setting, decision making, dealing with peer pressure, building healthy relationships, identifying and managing emotions, and communicating effectively.

Students will learn about the consequences of drug and alcohol use.

Too Good for Drugs is proven to reduce student risk and increase protective factors, including:

  • Attitudes toward ATOD use

  • Peer norms relating to ATOD use

  • Peers’ acceptance of ATOD use

  • Emotional competence and sense of self-efficacy

  • Social and peer resistance skills

Too Good For Violence: Education About Emotional Regulation

Too Good for Violence is a school-based prevention program that addresses the most significant risk and protective factors facing students today.

The program targets each developmental level from K–12 to help students learn the skills and attitudes they need to get along peacefully with others.

During one of these programs, students will discuss and/or practice:

  • Managing strong emotions,

  • Active listening,

  • Expressing feelings to others,

  • Developing healthy relationships,

  • Enhancing social skills,

  • Practicing communication skills,

  • And more!
